Things to do Walking Free Tour: Atomic Bomb Hypocentre Park & Nagasaki Peace Park

Our tour begins at the Atomic Bomb Hypocenter Park, the point directly beneath where the atomic bomb exploded about 500 meters above the city on August 9, 1945. Marked by a simple black stone monument, it stands as a solemn reminder of that tragic moment. Next, we visit the remains of Urakami Cathedral, once one of the largest Christian churches in East Asia. Its ruins symbolize both destruction and the resilience of the local community. We then explore the ground area beneath the hypocenter to understand the scale of devastation. As we continue, we see various statues and memorials sharing messages of remembrance and peace. We also visit a preserved air-raid shelter, showing how civilians tried to protect themselves. Our journey continues to Nagasaki Peace Park, where statues from different countries reflect global unity and hope for a nuclear-free world. At the center stands the Peace Statue, symbolizing both warning and peace. Finally, we visit the Fountain of Peace, built in memory of victims who suffered from extreme thirst, offering a moving conclusion to the tour.
