Things to do Indispensable Maputo Free Downtown Walking Tour

The tour starts at the Praça da Independência (Independence Square). The first stops include the Art Deco Sé Cathedral, the Neo-Classical City Hall, the Statue of Mozambique first President, Samora Moisés Machel. The second part of the tour includes stops at the Franco-Moçambicano Cultural Center, then the Iron House designed by Eiffel, then visit the former swamp which is now the Botanical Garden. We continue the route until we reach the first Market of city, The Central Market. The third part of this tour passes through the original part of the city, where stop at the Central Train Station and finish the tour at Fort.

“Historical Walking Guide”

It felt more like a small summarized walk through of the city's history rather than a downtown walk. Based on the places visited and the amount of history explained by our guide. I enjoyed it and so did my friend, there was more information about the older history of the culture and the country which was thoroughly enjoyed.

Egas’s colleague was my guide and he was super friendly and had lots of information about Maputo and Mozambique. Very helpful in translating at the market as well, but never was pushy for me to buy something. If you’re in Maputo, and need an interesting activity to do, I’d recommend these guys.

“Feeling like locals ”

We met Egas in the cathedral for a walk around Maputo to see the musts and we were very lucky to be walking with him. We saw absolutely everything, the ups and downs of the city. We saw all the hidden corners and even tasted the delicious masala at the market. Very wise man with lot of knowledge, all of the city history and its people, who transmitted us his passion and love for his country. He kindly answer to all our questions and he recommended us a very local place to have lunch that we really enjoyed. He went above and beyond and we stayed in contact for recommendations of different places where to listen to live music. Also very happy that he sent us contacts to learn a bit of the local dancing by one of his friends. Very happy as we left with a feeling of having found a new friend. Thank you for everything! Hope to see Egas again when we come back to Maputo.
