Discover the deeper side of Gion on a relaxed walking tour with a local Japanese guide. This tour focuses on culture, history, and everyday traditions beyond the famous scenery. Led by Kazu Ashida, cultural specialist and author of “Japan Travel Essentials”, the tour offers clear and easy-to-understand explanations of Kyoto’s shrines, temples, and the Japanese approach to religion. You will also learn about the geisha and maiko culture in a respectful and informative way, focusing on history, training, and social customs—not rumors or stereotypes. Important Note This is NOT a geisha spotting tour. As the tour runs during the daytime (10:00 AM & 1:30 PM), actual encounters are rare. The focus is cultural understanding, not sightings. “Private tour in the rain”
Shortly before tour start the rain started pouring down, so when we meet the guide it’s only us. Everyone cancelled. Anyway we decided to take the tour in the rain and it was great. We got shown Gion and had a private tour for ourself. We had a lot of questions but all of them got answered during the walk. The pace was good with some time for own reflection and no stress.

One ifnthe beat walking tours we have done. kazu was a wealth of information and very entertaining. Very engaging amd k owledfable about all the arwas in the kyoto/ gion area. It wa great to bisit a temple and shrine and kazu exolained the difderence between them as i did not know. Highly recommned this tour with Kazu!

We enjoyed a lot the tour and explanation. It was nice to go to streets or places where we might not have seen without the tour. The guide was very helpful and gave us a good lunch recommendation. Bare in mind that he goes fast, for us it was no problem but we saw some other participants which seemed to have trouble following up.

The tour title is walking tour in Gion. We expected to hear about the district and the famouse stories sbout the Geishas.
The tour was mainly about two temples and the deferance between temple and shrein. It may be interesting, but it’s not what we expected.

Disappointing Experience – Unprofessional and Arrogant Guide
I joined a short tour that, unfortunately, turned out to be a frustrating experience due to the behavior of the guide. From the very beginning, they displayed a condescending attitude, treating guests with little respect and zero empathy. If someone paused for just a few seconds to take a photo — which is perfectly normal on a tour — they were mocked openly, with sarcastic remarks that made everyone uncomfortable.
The guide seemed easily irritated by basic requests. When asked to speak a little louder or move closer so people could hear, they responded with visible annoyance, as if being asked to do their job was somehow offensive.
What should have been an enjoyable and informative outing felt more like an endurance test. I strongly advise against booking this tour if you’re looking for a respectful, engaging, and professional experience.

He gave us a lot of interesting information about the japanese way of living, the shinto and buddhism religion and their origin, the meaning of those religion to the japanese people, the difference between shrines and temples, the geisha culture, the japanese language,…
We visited the Gion quarter, the Yasaka shrine and Chionin temple.
Kazu was a very kind guide open for any question to answer and very fluent in speaking english. The tour even could have been longer since the 2,5 hours went by really fast.

About the relation of the Japanese people to religion, about the schooling of geisha’s, about the differences between temples and shrines… the pace was quite quick and some may prefer to take it slow or go back but it was a great experience upon arrival in Kyoto.
