Discover Kamakura on a 2-hour walking tour with a local guide. Explore Wakamiya-oji, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, and Komachi Street while learning about samurai traditions, Shinto, Buddhism, and local life.
Explore Kamakura with Terry, an English-speaking local guide based in the city.
On this relaxed two-hour walking tour, discover how Kamakura became the center of Japan’s first samurai government and how that history still shapes the city today.
Starting near Kamakura Station, we walk along historic Wakamiya-oji toward Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kamakura’s most important shrine and a place closely connected with Minamoto no Yoritomo and the rise of the samurai.
Along the way, you will learn about samurai history, Japanese culture, Shinto and Buddhism, shrine customs, and everyday life in Japan. The explanations are designed to be easy to follow and enjoyable rather than a formal history lecture.
After visiting the shrine, we walk through lively Komachi Street on the way back toward Kamakura Station. I will also share local recommendations for food, cafés, temples, and places to explore after the tour.
Questions and conversation are always welcome. My goal is for you to leave Kamakura not only having seen its famous sights, but understanding the stories and culture behind them.
