Hokitika History Walk

Join me on a walking tour of the town area, where I'll guide you like a local and show you the old and new places. Hokitika is a city built on the gold rushes of the 1860s, and I'll take you to explore the fascinating vestiges of its golden past.

Things to do Hokitika History Walk

The tour takes about 90 minutes and is aimed at all ages and fitness abilities. We meet outside the i site. I’ll tell you the story of English Pioneer Richard Seddon who came to the West Coast gold rushes and ended up being the Premier of New Zealand. He was quite a character. Afterward, we’ll continue our walk to the Heritage Area along the Hokitika River. Here you’ll see and hear the stories of the sailing ships that brought passengers and supplies to the West Coast. Then we’ll try and work out how they fitted 80 hotels into the main street in the 1860s. We’ll stop outside the Carnegie Building and hear how Andrew Carnegie the Scottish-American Industrialist donated money to the colonies to build libraries. My talk will be illustrated with photos from the Hokitika Museum. Ask me anything else you’d like to know about our cool little town. I’ll even help you decide where to go for coffee.
