Things to do Discovering The Secrets of Garbage City and the Cave Church

Visit one of the unique places in Cairo with Abanoub, a local, born and raised in Manshiyat Nasser (also known as "Garbage City"). We will visit: - Churches: Cave church, Cathedral church, St Mark church (Roman theatre) - Fun: one of the highest pigeon towers with a spectacular view of Cairo - Art: eL Seed’s giant mural over 50 houses, recycling handicrafts made by local women - Sport: zipline, low ropes, high ropes, climbing, via Ferrata, giant swing (activities are optional, payment to the centre directly) - Recycling: Recycling centre showing how residents of Garbage City get one of the highest recycling rates in the world IMPORTANT: please text me on WhatsApp to confirm your booking and visit preferences (eg tuk tuk or walking)

“Another cairo”

At was a unique tour thats different from the standard tours. It’s was very interesting to see how the different families recycle almost all of cairos waste and work like a huge factory. Abanoub was a really knowledgeable and friendly guide. 100% recommend if you wanna see another Cairo.

“Special and great tour”

Under the guidance of tour guide Abanoub Melad, we visited the Cave Church and Garbage City, observing the lives of the residents of Garbage City up close, learning how they manage waste, and visiting the Pigeon Tower. The guide provided a detailed introduction and helped with photography. It was a wonderful and unique experience.

“Off the beaten-track tour”

This tour gives you such an interesting perspective on what cairo is like. The guide seems to know everyone in the garbage city and is well respected. He took us to fascinating places. The people are so friendly, enthousiastic children approached us many times and we felt perfectly safe throughout the tour. I can recommend this tour to those that are looking for a real adventure.

“Carbage City Tour”

Abanoub is a very good guide, and this tour is really worth the effort. Unlike most of the tourist tours you will do in Egypt, this one is really a added value compared to when you would walk by yourself. You get to see al the different recylcle area's, a vieuwpoint and he takes you on top of the pigeon towers. My advise: do this tour, it will broaden your horizon and actually help local people. “Great tour”

This is a fantastic tour! We learnt a lot about this part of Cairo. We got to observe a range of activities and Abanoub, our guide, explained everything very well. “Stunning experience”

A full immersion in the life of the Zabaleen and the cave church, a must see when in Cairo. Not the traditional Cairo tour, recommended for those that want to experience something different yet important for the city of Cairo, Abanoub is friendly, kind, helpful and takes you to places you don’t see everyday. People are nice and welcoming but you need to respect them. They are working in very harsh conditions, so my tip is to be moderate, be kind, no pictures to women, enjoy such unique experience. “Fantastic tour of a lesser seen Cairo”

I'd highly recommend Abanoub's tour to anyone visiting Cairo - it's got a bit of everything- the stunning churches carved in stone, stunning street art from a world famous artist, a very local past time - the art of pigeon keeping, and, most interestingly, how the people of Mokattam manage to recycle the tons of waste generated by a city of 20 million. Abanoub is great and knows everyone. If you want to do a tour of a lesser seen Cairo that's respectful, he is the man for the situation!

“Explore the Garbage City with an insider”

Very nice and organized tour. Abanoub is an excellent guide. It's quite unique to tour around this site with an insider who lives there and knows the local people so well. The complex includes two big churches, 5 smaller chapels and lots of art works. We went there with our 2 years old. Abanoub tailored the tour to our needs and arranged a car to take us to the train station. Highly recommended!

“Amazing tour!”

We initially missed each other at the start point but Abanoub made a huge effort to get hold of us. It was incredible walking through Garbage City with someone who knows the area. We were treated to great local snacks and saw the most amazing things. Real life changing experience. Highly recommended
