Things to do Tour To Philae Temple, High Dam & The Unfinished Obelisk

You will meet your guide at your hotel reception to commence your trip to: The High Dam: During the British Colony of Egypt, another dam (Aswan Dam) was built. The dam wasn’t enough for the high floods. So the High Dam was built. The construction began in the early 1960s and ended in 1971. The dam is one of the great engineering feats of the world in the 1960s. During the Greco-Roman period the magnificent Temple of Philae, the Pearl of Egypt was built. It was during this period the cult center of the goddess Isis, the goddess of love and magic. Philae is derived from Pilak, the island’s Coptic name which means the isolated spot. In the 1970s, the temple was dismantled into 40,000 parts due to the impact of the waters of Aswan Dam and High Dam it was moved to its current site, the Island of Agalika. Philae was converted into four churches during the Coptic period therefore, damage can be seen on the reliefs as well as lots of graffiti left by travelers to the island. You will end your tour at the Unfinished Obelisk. The Unfinished Obelisk is the largest piece of granite sculptured in Ancient Egypt. It is 43 meters high and weighs 1200 tonnes.
