Join us on a full-day adventure to Debre Libanos and the Blue Nile Gorge! Discover breathtaking views, meet Gelada monkeys, enjoy local coffee, a traditional dinner, and experience vibrant folk dancing. Unforgettable moments await!
You will meet our staff at the hotel or airport and drive from Addis Ababa to Debre Libanos Monastery and the Portuguese Bridge. It is located 105 km northwest of Addis Ababa. It takes two and a half hours of scenic driving to reach this historical and highly respected monastery in Ethiopia. It was founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot.
First, we will visit the museum, which has a large collection of ancient Bible books, religious crosses, clothes, and some traditional materials that were used in the monastery in earlier times. Second, we will see the internal parts of the church, including the tomb of the monastery’s founder and beautiful stained glass windows.
Later, you will visit the Portuguese Bridge, built by the Portuguese during the 16th century, surrounded by beautiful landscapes. If you're lucky, you may also spot one of Ethiopia’s endemic mammals, the Gelada monkey.
Finally, we will have lunch in front of the beautiful Jemma River Gorge. After lunch, we will return to Addis. On the way, we may have a chance to see some birds, traditional Ethiopian huts, and farmlands.
